Q & A
What is Taekwon-Do?
Taekwon-Do is a modern Korean martial art.  The name means the "art of foot and hand fighting".  The name "Taekwon-Do" was given to this style of martial art by Grandmaster Choi Hong Hi, who created the original Taekwon-Do patterns.  Grandmaster Choi's pen name is Chang Hon (Blue Cottage) and the traditional patterns practiced are called the "Chang Hon" Pattern set.  Traditional Chang Hon Taekwon-Do is a refinement and combination of centuries of Korean and Japanese martial arts.  It involves the skilled application of many different hand and kicking techniques for blocking and hard attacks to provide self defense against multiple attackers.

Are there any age limits?
Anyone over the age of 5 is welcome.  We offer traditional Taekwon-Do training to Men, Women, Children, and Seniors.  We also have a special "Little Eagles" program for children 5 through 7 and a "Raptors" program for children 8 through 10.

Do I need to sign a contract?
No, at Skyline Taekwon-Do we do not have contracts.  Our students pay monthly dues for the classes and programs offered.  You pay only for each month's classes you wish to attend.

Will I learn self defense?
Self defense is an integral part of the classes at Skyline Taekwon-Do.  Students learn practical self defense through hard style techniques such as punching and kicking, as well as releases from grabs, how to fall and roll, and how to unbalance and throw an attacker.

What is class like?
Classes are formal and combine both eastern and western traditions in a disciplined learning environment.  Students wear uniforms, line up, bow, and learn to treat one another with courtesy and respect.  Each class subject will vary, but generally includes punching, kicking, and self defense exercises, learning and practicing traditional patterns, light safe-contact sparring with protective pads, and the philosophy of Taekwon-Do.

Can I visit a class before I sign-up?
Absolutely!  Call us or stop by the Sports Center.  Visitors are always welcome to view a class.

How do I register for classes?
Class tuition is paid to Alta Canyon Sports Center.  You can register on-line or in person at the Sports Center your first night.   You can register any time.  Classes are on-going and your first month's tuition can be prorated if you sign-up after the first week of the month.

What do I need to start?
For your first class, wear comfortable loose fitting clothing.  After you start classes, you will need a uniform and club patch.  Only plain white double wrap uniforms without outside logos are allowed in class.   Uniforms, patches, and all your martial arts training equipment needs are available through Skyline Taekwon-Do.

Are there other costs?
Uniforms, personal training equipment, test fees for rank advancement, and yearly membership in the YCTA are additional cost.

What if I've had other martial arts training?
